The Diaries of John Pinyon of Sandhurst and Northiam,

and Other Material

Sitemap         Home

John Pinyon's Diaries were originally deposited at ESRO in 1968. They have now been transferred to CKS, which holds further material relating to the Pinyon family. I am grateful to Christopher Whittick, Senior Archivist at ESRO, who suggested including transcripts on this site, and for his help and encouragement.

John Pinyon began the diaries whilst still fifteen and still sometimes attending school in Robertsbridge. Daily entries, except during illness, until a few days before his death in 1859. It is not Kilvert or Pepys, and it is not Genealogists Heaven. If you hope for much that is personal you may be disappointed, and you may read it thinking How? When? Where? What? Who? Why? But there is a good deal that repays close attention, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Transcriptions of all books are now on site, plus a transcript of a copy of a letter to John Humphrey. Two files giving tasters of material from his account books are included.
